Anthropic Secures $10 Billion Compute Deal with Nvidia-Backed Volta at Hydro-Powered Norwegian Data Center

In a landmark move that underscores a structural shift in how artificial intelligence infrastructure is financed and built, Anthropic has signed a six-year, $10 billion computing agreement with Volta Infra Holdings.

As per Astute Analytica, sovereign AI infrastructure market is estimated at USD 28 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 202 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 21.8% over the forecast period 2026–2035.

The deal will deliver 133 megawatts (MW) of gross AI compute capacity—yielding approximately 121 MW of IT load—at a sprawling data center in Tydal, Norway. The facility is operated by Bitdeer Technologies, powered entirely by renewable hydropower, and will be built on Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin architecture, with Dell reportedly serving as the technology provider.

The agreement sets a new playbook for the AI industry, bridging capital-light frontier labs, heavy-infrastructure "neoclouds," and pivoting crypto-miners into a massive, multi-billion-dollar ecosystem.

The Mechanics of a Mega-Deal

The contract coincides with Volta Infra Holdings emerging from stealth. Despite being just seven months old, the Nvidia-backed startup announced a $300 million funding round at a $2.4 billion valuation on the same day it locked in this $10 billion off-take agreement.

To fulfill the massive energy and space requirements, Volta has partnered with Bitdeer Technologies—a former pure-play crypto-miner now aggressively pivoting into AI data center operations. Bitdeer will host the infrastructure under a 16-year colocation lease with Volta, representing roughly $4.7 billion in contracted revenue. Delivery of the capacity will be executed in two phases, starting December 31, 2026, and concluding by March 31, 2027, perfectly aligning with Anthropic’s product roadmap and enterprise demand cycle.

The Era of the "Compute Landlord"

This historic partnership highlights several major structural shifts currently reshaping the tech landscape:

1. The Rise of Infrastructure Outsourcing
Volta’s staggering 4:1 contract-to-valuation ratio signals the dawn of the "compute landlord." Instead of waiting for traditional hyperscaler capital expenditure cycles, capital-light AI labs are shifting balance-sheet-heavy infrastructure to specialized neoclouds like Volta. These firms use long-term off-take agreements to secure project finance, creating a new asset class in tech infrastructure.

2. Nvidia as Chief Financier and Orchestrator
Volta is explicitly backed by Nvidia, and the deployment relies on Nvidia's Vera Rubin hardware stack. This is more than a simple chip sale; it is a vertically coordinated bundle of silicon, power, real estate, and credit. By backing the infrastructure layer, Nvidia is de-risking deployment for top-tier customers and directly managing GPU scarcity.

3. The Crypto-to-AI Pivot
Bitdeer’s transition from Bitcoin mining to AI colocation illustrates a simple mathematical reality: AI workloads pay significantly more per watt and offer multi-year stability compared to the volatile crypto market. Long-duration leases provide reliable cash flows, enabling cheaper project financing and accelerating a wave of "AI-ready" facility conversions.

As AI models scale, so does their carbon footprint. The Tydal campus relies entirely on Norwegian hydropower, offering a stable, low-carbon baseload essential for training clusters that run 24/7. For frontier labs facing ESG pressure to decarbonize, Nordic hydro has transformed into a critical strategic asset.

5. Anthropic’s Hedging Strategy
While OpenAI remains heavily tethered to Microsoft Azure and Google leverages its vertically integrated TPU/GCP stack, Anthropic is prioritizing vendor optionality. Having already signed major compute deals with AWS, Google Cloud, and Oracle, Anthropic’s addition of a dedicated neocloud arrangement reduces single-vendor risk and maximizes its negotiating leverage across cost, latency, and model tiers.

Market Implications and Looming Risks

For infrastructure investors, the Volta-Anthropic deal signals that project finance is back in full force. Long-term (10-to-16-year) leases with credit-worthy tenants are enabling highly attractive debt financing. Consequently, hydro-rich regions like Scandinavia, Quebec, and the Pacific Northwest are expected to command massive real estate premiums.

Chipmakers and system integrators will likely emulate Nvidia’s bundled consortia model (chipmaker + infra fund + operator). Furthermore, the extreme power density of the Vera Rubin chips means that facility-level cooling and power distribution will become first-order competitive differentiators.

However, the mega-deal is not without risks. Execution remains the primary hurdle; with phased deliveries slated for the end of 2026, any delays will severely disrupt Anthropic’s capacity planning. Additionally, credit concentration is a factor—a $10 billion off-take is only as viable as the counterparty’s ability to fund and deliver. There are also long-term questions regarding demand cyclicality: if inference economics shift toward smaller, on-device, or distilled models, this heavily provisioned, dedicated capacity could become a financial burden.
